Shadow Labyrinth is a strange but fascinating metroidvania cocktail, where PAC-MAN (or rather, his gothic double PUCK) turns into your sarcastic companion in a gloomy, war-torn world. Instead of the usual waffles and ghosts - rusty technology, twisted biomes and enemies with delayed reflexes, which PUCK happily absorbs whole, like a rejected character from "God Eater". You are a nameless swordsman with amnesia (affectionately nicknamed “Number Eight”), leaping across ruins with the grace of a cat on a slippery parquet floor: stylish, but with the risk of missing at the most inopportune moments.
Everything is strange here, from the story (which intertwines with Bandai Namco’s timeline) to the gameplay. One minute you’re hacking away at monsters with triple combos, the next you’re turning into a PUCK to roll along rails like a pinball, or diving into a minigame that’s like PAC-MAN on steroids: mazes with platforming traps, five-minute timers, and tricky bomb panels. The engine is capricious in places – leaping across chasms requires extreme precision, and bosses initially feel like punching puppets – but once you get going, you feel like a master of the chaos. Especially after activating GAIA: a mechanized version of PAC-MAN that munches on enemies like popcorn, leaving behind only a puddle of 80s nostalgia.
Despite the stark contrast between the dark setting and the silly references (the perk shop that sells “spines and shells” is not a yellow circle with eyes), the game manages to maintain balance. The map is designed in such a way that secrets are found naturally, and the mixture of classic platforming and high-speed “rail” runs will not let you get bored.
