Word 2016 is the latest version of Microsoft's popular word processing program, Word. While it's a feature-rich upgrade from the old program, it also includes significant changes that distinguish it from its predecessor. The key difference with Microsoft Word download is that all documents must be saved in Microsoft's new "Open Document Format for Office Files (DOCX)" format, which is incompatible with earlier iterations of the program. There's also no backward compatibility with earlier versions of Word download. This means users can't save Microsoft Word free documents in the older formats they're accustomed to or open Word 2016 documents in older versions. Functions from earlier versions have been replaced by newer ones, such as "group editing" (explained later). However, there's still hope for those who have to continue using outdated formats: According to Microsoft, security updates for [earlier word processing programs] will be available by 2020 or 2025.
The Ribbon interface upgrade is another significant change. The Ribbon now sits just above the document at the top of the window. With all options in one place, this change makes it easier to find them when updating a document. Additionally, the Ribbon has been improved and simplified; many infrequently used features have been eliminated, and frequently used functions have been moved between tabs. Alongside these changes, users can now “track changes” to their documents. And they can sign documents using their fingerprints, something previously only available on signature tablets. This feature also includes features from previous iterations, such as color-coding documents.
